Our modern diets are all about convenience. We live life at such a frantic pace that convenience foods have become a way of life. Things that are quick and easy to cook for dinner, or things that we can grab on the way home to feed our hungry bellies.

The fact that fast foods are full of bad fats, sugars, preservatives and processed ingredients is public knowledge. But were you aware that many of our daily staple items include these things too?

Something as simple as a loaf of white bread is a major culprit. It contains sugars for flavour, preservatives to keep it fresh for longer, and is full of overly processed white flour. 

The carbohydrates give you a quick hit of energy, but leave you wanting more a short time later. You won’t feel full for long and will constantly have to replenish your energy sources. For some people, this can lead to weight gain.

Without the correct level of insulin, your blood sugar can skyrocket or plummet. This is incredibly dangerous for your body.

Obesity: 

There is a distinct difference between carrying a few extra kilos and being obese. Obesity means you are carrying excessive body fat and can be a threat to your health. Being obese puts your internal organs under strain and increases your chance of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, gallstones, sleep apnea, and also increases your chance of having a stroke.

Sugar Addiction:

You know when you need sugar so desperately that you comb your cupboards looking for something, anything that will give you a sugar fix? Chances are, you are experiencing sugar addiction. Consuming sugar will give a burst of quick energy, a spike in your blood sugar – a sugar high. But then after your body processes that sugar it leaves you feeling low. So you have more sugar to get that high again.

It becomes a vicious cycle, an addiction. You need to keep feeding your body the thing that it craves, or you suffer a rather sobering come down. It is dangerous to rely on sugar hits to get you through the day, as your blood sugar constantly spikes and drops. It can affect your weight, your blood pressure, your cholesterol, your sleep and your mood.

What Can You Do About It?

Let’s not sugar coat it, you need to eat better. Cut out the processed foods and switch to more wholesome varieties. This will require some commitment and dedication as your body will be used to processed varieties of food.

The best way to overhaul your eating habits is to follow an eating plan that you can stick to. If you are struggling to lose weight then a radical diet is hard to maintain, and when you give it up you can end up putting the weight back on again. So it is important to choose an eating habit that aligns with your lifestyle. 

Something like the Keto diet is great because you get to eat plenty of filling foods that you like, and simply cut out those overly processed and refined carbohydrates.

Regardless of whether you want to lose weight or not, following a healthy eating plan will do your body a world of good. Eating natural and wholesome foods is what the animals do and it seems to work pretty well for them.

The effect that processed foods have had on our society are frightening. The Diabetes and Obesity rates have skyrocketed in recent years. We have become an unhealthy society with differing levels of food addiction who are struggling to lose weight. It is time to do what the animals do, eat healthier and stay active.
